Do you think you can guess the flags of South American countries? It may seem easy, but you will soon find out it’s hard.

South America has an area of 17,818,508 km² or 11.5% of the Earth’s land, ranking fourth in the world in terms of area, after Asia, Africa and North America, and in terms of population, is in fifth place, after Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. South America stretches from the Caribbean Sea in the north to the cold Fire Country in the south, the extreme tip of the continent, and the Drake Strait separates it from Antarctica. South America is also called Latin America due to the fact that its inhabitants speak Spanish and Portuguese, languages of Latin origin brought by Europeans.
There are some historical sources that indicate that the first inhabitants of South America were the hunters who crossed the Bering Natural Bridge, now the Bering Strait, and there are some suggestions that they migrated here from the southern Pacific Ocean. The oldest known civilization in South America is Norte Chico, which developed on the Pacific coast between 3000 and 1800 BC. It was followed by the cultures of Chavin, Paracas, Mochica, Nazca, Wari, Chimu. In the 1530s, the native inhabitants of South America came into contact with European explorers, first the Spanish and then the Portuguese, who founded the colonies on the continent. The colonization of South America generally took place with the colonization of North America, but with some delay due to the fact that Europeans first assimilated the territory of present-day Mexico and the United States and then the territories further south. In the 16th century, Spain and Portugal divided their area into spheres of influence, and later, at the beginning of the 19th century, the states here proclaimed their independence.
South America is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean and stretches across the Equator and the tropics of Capricorn. The continent is located almost entirely in the southern hemisphere and is 7,400 km long from the north, from the Caribbean Sea to the south, at Cape Horn. The continent’s maximum width is 5,160 km and is reached between Ponta do Seixas, on the Brazilian Atlantic coast and Punta Parinas, on the Peruvian Pacific coast.
