Grand Theft Auto (also abbreviated GTA) is a series of action-adventure video games, available for countless platforms, including PC, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android, respectively, iOS, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, developed by Rockstar Games. The series currently consists of 15 games, starting with Grand Theft Auto in 1997 and currently continuing with Grand Theft Auto V in 2013. Depending on the release date and platform, the games use a different graphics engine, but all are made by Rockstar Games and distributed by Take-Two Interactive.
All games in the series (except GTA London 1969 and 1961, as well as GTA 2) take place in parodied versions of some popular cities in the United States: Los Santos (parody after Los Angeles), Vice City (Miami), San Fierro (San Francisco), Las Venturas (Las Vegas), and Liberty City (New York City), all varying depending on the universe (in the 2D and 3D universe, cities only borrow certain aspects of real life, but in the HD universe these are faithful recreations). The two GTA London games are the only ones to take place in a real city, namely London, although it is not a faithful representation of the city, while GTA 2 takes place in an imaginary city, called Anywhere City. Each game in the series takes place in an open-world sandbox world, which can be explored at will, without any limits, as long as the player is not on a mission. GTA III is often praised for revolutionizing the genre of sandbox games.
The GTA series is considered a very violent and perverse title, Rockstar having many problems because of it, because there are many scenes with swearing, pornography and extreme violence. In the case of GTA V, Rockstar had 2 big problems, the first with a girl who was in a poster of the game, although she declares that she would not have approved anything, and the second with a mission in which you have to torture a person . The company has been sued by some mothers who let their children play GTA, although all titles are marked by PEGI as 18+. The story of each game focuses on a protagonist who rises more and more on the social scale of criminals and becomes richer and more successful, each for different reasons, sometimes only being caught unintentionally in this world of crime; GTA V was the first and only title in the series to include 3 protagonists. The characters in the series are usually played by many famous actors, including Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper, Samuel L. Jackson, Debbie Harry, Phil Collins, Axl Rose and Peter Fonda.
In GTA games, especially in San Andreas, several myths and legends are addressed such as the Shady Creek Monster, UFOs, Aliens, Bigfoot, Ghost of the Ballas Clan, the Epsilon Program (or Epsilon Cult), K.A.C.C, Ghost Lake and Leatherface. Also, GTA III has some myths, the most popular being Ghost Town and Darkel, and for Vice City we have Victor Vance’s Ghost, Ricardo Diaz’s Ghost, Ghost Boats and The Sinking Corpse.
