Game of Thrones is a fantasy TV series and it was created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of the book series, Song of Fire and Ice, the series of fantastic books by George R. R. Martin, the first book being called The Game of Thrones. The show was filmed in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco and Spain. The premiere took place on HBO on April 17, 2011, and the last episode appeared on May 19, 2019, the series ending with 8 seasons and 73 episodes.
Taking place on the fictional continents, Westeros and Essos, The Game of Thrones has several stories and multiple main characters, but follows three important narrative threads. The first narrative thread is that of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, and seeks a series of alliances and conflicts between noble dynasties, either to win the Throne or to be independent of it. The second narrative thread is based on the story of the descendant of the realms, who was exiled and who plans to return to the throne. The third thread focused on the Night Circle, an ancient brotherhood that provides defense of the realm against the old threats of fierce people and legendary creatures from Beyond the Wall, and a harsh winter that threatens the realm.
Game of Thrones has garnered record views on HBO and has a large number of active fans around the world. He was praised by critics, especially for acting, complex characters, story and production quality, although frequent use of nudity and violence scenes has been criticized.
The series is generally appreciated for its realism on the Medieval world. George R. R. Martin, made the series read more as historical fiction than as the contemporary fantasy genre, with less emphasis on magic and more on battles, political intrigue and characters. Martin said that “the true horrors of human history do not come from orcs and dark Lords, but from ourselves.”
A common theme in the fantasy genre is the struggle between good and evil, which Martin says does not mirror the real world. Like people’s ability to have both good and bad, Martin explores the idea of redeeming and changing characters. The series allows the audience to see the world from several points of view, something rarely found in fantasy series, and those who support evil can show their part of the story.
